Chapter Nineteen

Josef

Théoden stood over me like some cocky overlord. The motherfucker! He had outsmarted me at every turn and what little plans I had in place paled in comparison to what he could do to me at this point. I hadn’t taken into consideration that he’d expose me to the colony. I had all of the leverage until that card was played and played well. On top of all of that, he wanted me to hand over one of my sons for him to kill. How could I? How could he ask that of me?

I knew he was ruthless, but shit, demanding the life of my son is just hellish. Maybe I can offer him something more instead. Something that would be just as valuable to him, but what? He’d already taken everything I had that was mine to give or claim. My mate, my territory and now he even had me. Never had I’d loss so badly to an enemy. I don’t even remember the last time I had to taste defeat. Shit, Josef, think!

“Is there anything else that I can give you that you want?” I asked, hoping I could bargain. I climbed to my feet as I awaited his reply.

“Can you bring my son, Ryu, back to life?” he asked, as he walked over to the corpse of his deceased son.

“You can’t ask this of me,” I pleaded which is something I didn’t do. I never had to beg for anything, at least not for the life of my son.

“I can and I have,” Théoden shot back.

“What—”

“You have nothing to bargain with, wolf,” Théoden said, rising with Ryu’s body in his arms. “But you do have until midnight to deliver on your debt. If you can’t give me one, then I will take all. I will also kill your right-hand man just for the hell of it.”

Son of a bitch! I looked at Sani, my best friend, who I was happy had survived the battle as did my son Giorgio, who was now coming to. I couldn’t let either of them die. I looked at the dragon standing over Giorgio as my son shook the cobwebs from his head. The dragon seemed to be taking a familiar interest in my son, one that I recognized and greatly disapproved of.

Damn that fucking dragon! He’d rendered Giorgio and Sasha unconscious during the battle right before he took Dante as leverage. That motherfucking dragon was the deciding factor in this battle that tilted everything in Théoden’s favor. Had he not been here, I know I would have won. Sure, I hadn’t anticipated Théoden being awake and waiting on us, but we had a strong chance.

Fuck, how did he even know I’d come after Dante? None of that matters now. I failed and now my family had to pay. I had no idea how I could pick one of my children to send to the slaughter. What he was demanding of me was beyond cruel, even for a vampire. I know one thing, I will make him pay for it.
