“Tell me again what, exactly, you were doing on the flight line, Sergeant Alvarez,” the MP officer repeated for what had to be the third time in the last hour, leaning across his desk toward me, arms resting on top of the inset touchscreen display.

“I’ve already told you everything, sir,” I said, leaning back in the chair.

It wasn’t a comfortable chair, probably on purpose. The whole room was designed to be uncomfortable, to make anyone brought in here ill at ease, from the pasty white of the wall color to the up-and-down straight metal of the furniture to the slightly-too-warm temperature that would make someone just a little bit nervous sweat down the small of their back. Not that I’d know that first-hand or anything. I wondered what effect it had on the people who had to work here every day.

“Tell me again, anyway,” the 2nd Lieutenant insisted. He’d never told me his name, but the tape across his uniform chest read Lucas.

Lucas was following some book, I could tell by the bored expression on his face. He knew this was a waste of time, but the MP interrogation book said to keep asking the same questions over and over until the suspect contradicted themselves and then pounce on the inconsistency. It was the same book the cops back in Trans Angeles followed, and I’d been in this uncomfortable chair many, many times.

“I was just curious,” I said, a sigh creeping out beneath the words. “I’ve been on two missions using the new tactics and I wanted to know more so I could do my job better.”

Lucas grunted, making a mark with his finger on the touch screen. I thought maybe we were done, that he’d given up, but the exterior door to the Military Police station opened with a blast of cold air, and with the chill came a younger man dressed in black. He was a prick. I knew it before he opened his mouth. When you’ve met as many pricks as I had through the years, you get a sense for them. It was in the set of his dark eyes, the hint of a smirk on his narrow mouth.

“I’m Lt. Darian,” he announced, as if that explained everything. “Fleet Intelligence,” he added, just in case it didn’t. “I was notified there was a security breach.”

“There was unauthorized personnel on the flight line,” Lucas explained, then frowned. “I mean…no. Personnel is plural, isn’t it? What’s the singular?”

Oh, Jeez, this guy is a winner.

The prick thought so, too. Darian rolled his eyes and motioned toward me.

“Is this the security breach?”

“Oh, yeah,” Lucas said, nodding. “This is Sergeant Cameron Isaac Alvarez, Delta Company, Fourth Platoon of the Marine Drop Troopers here on base.”

Darian punched something into his tablet, frowned at it for a second, then looked around the mostly-empty office, catching the eye of a Corporal who was sitting at a nearby desk. He looked from the Corporal to the extra chair and back again and the woman sighed and pushed away from her desk, grabbing the chair and hauling it over to him.
