Iconic

Last night, sleepless, I went up top for some air, stuffing my mask in my pocket. A crew member was out on the fly deck, letting go a heap of used PPE — it was caught by the gale and billowed away into the dark. After all this time at sea I was longing for communication. I offered him a cigarette and he lifted his mask to light up.

‘What’s the deal?’ I asked him. ‘Enzed not playing ball?’

Turned out his English wasn’t so hot. Maybe he was also under instructions not to talk to the clients.

‘Guy gone missing,’ he said. ‘Contact in Christchurch.’

‘And who’s that?’

He shook his head, looking around nervously, blowing smoke into the wind.

‘He knows we’ve got it aboard? Covid?’

Another shake. ‘Guy high up. Gone missing.’ The glowing butt followed the plastic into the poor bloody sea.

After he returned below I sat out on my own for a while. It was icy, gusty, and my chest felt heavy. I coughed a bit, but that was just the cigarette. The French are putting it about that smoking protects you from the virus. Sounds too good to be true.
