EIGHTEEN
ONCE THEY WERE BACK OUT on the interstate, they headed in the opposite direction of Lakemoor and the trail of carnage theyâd left behind there. Theyâd come to no agreement regarding a destination, had barely even discussed it in their hurry to leave the storage facility. As Zach steered them down the highway, the knowledge that the exit to Stillwater Lake was about one-hundred miles in the direction they were going was never far from his mind.
That was just far enough away to feel safely removed from the chaos of the situation they were leaving behind, yet not so far heâd have to spend a dangerously protracted amount of time on the interstate. He felt exposed on the open road. It was still daylight and so many cars, including one police cruiser already, were zipping by them in the passing lane. He was careful to turn his head away as each vehicle passed, trying his best to do it in a way that appeared casual. The worst was when he saw the cop car coming up fast in the rearview mirror. He kept his gaze straight ahead while his hands shook on the steering wheel, but the cop in the cruiser didnât even glance his way as he roared on by.
Chelsea never even noticed the cop. She was in the passenger seat, working to free one of the burner phones from its hard plastic packaging with a knife. It was a big, serrated hunting knife, another of the pilfered items from the storage unit. It looked like it could unzip a manâs guts within seconds, but the phoneâs packaging would not yield easily to the deadly-looking blade.
After a monumental struggle, punctuated with shrieks of rage and frustration, she did finally manage to free the phone from the shredded hard plastic. It came with a cheap charger that had a long, thin black cord. She plugged it into the electrical socket beneath the radio and powered the phone on.
Zach observed all this from the corner of his eye as he drove. âDoes it work?â
Chelsea grunted. âYeah, but I need to activate it.â
She retrieved the discarded package from the floor, flipped it over, and started punching in the activation number. A couple minutes passed while she went through a process of punching in numeric responses to the inquiries of the robot voice on the other end.
Then she sighed and glanced at Zach. âAll set. Itâs got some pre-programmed data and talk time, so no need for a credit card.â
Zach nodded.
He wasnât sure what use they had for a phone. Not at this juncture anyway. They were avoiding their mother and there was no one else they could safely phone or text. He supposed it would be good to have in the event of some dire emergency, but even then, who would they call? They wouldnât be able to reach out to their mother even if they wanted to, as sheâd also disposed of her phone to avoid tracking. It was a scary thing.
