Chapter 10

Kieran

Kieran stared out the window in his study, barely registering that, at some point, the sky had darkened and cast his backyard in shadows. A bat flittered in the sky, highlighted by the glow from the full moon and the dreamy, lingering light of dusk. Usually, this was his favorite time of day, when everything started to quiet.

He didn’t feel very settled right now though. His right shoulder was pressed against the glass, the slight chill from the evening air seeping through the thin material of his dress shirt. His jacket had been tossed aside hours ago—he wasn’t even sure where, but it wasn’t in the room with him. He held a half-empty decanter of bourbon in his hand, mostly forgotten as he continued to peer out over the south gardens.

It’d been hours since Theo had stormed out. Since Kieran had made some excuse to Lucky about him having an emergency with the gallery before he’d come up here and locked himself away.

That moment in his bedroom, the way Theo had looked at him, kept playing on repeat in his mind, taunting him for being such a moron. For losing his cool the way that he had.

He’d thought he was over it.

He’d been wrong. So wrong. And Theo had paid the price for it.

Or, maybe he was the one paying after all. Kieran chuckled at himself humorlessly. For all he knew, Theo was at The Great Perhaps right now, getting wasted and making out with whoever happened to pass by.

He pictured Max with his hands in Theo’s hair, pressing him up against the dark red bathroom wall, tongue fucking his mouth.

Kieran slammed the decanter down on the windowsill with so much force, liquor splashed over the rim and onto his hand.

Theo was angry at him right now, sure, but he wouldn’t do something like that? Right? Something public would risk getting back to their parents and if they found out—

He paused.

What if Theo did it in private? What if he took Max, or whoever, back to his place and on the very same couch Kieran had taken him—

“Kieran.” Dorian knocked loudly on the door. “Let me in or I’ve been permitted to break it down.”

He debated whether or not to ignore the threat, but if nothing else, his friend could at least pose as a distraction from the downward spiral his thoughts had just started taking. Crossing the room, he twisted the lock and yanked open the door.

“I’m twenty-eight,” he reminded, “not sixteen.”

Dorian shrugged. “The breaking of the door was Lucky’s suggestion, not mine.” He pushed his way inside and dropped down onto the leather couch. “You should be thanking me. The only reason you got this much alone time at all was because I convinced Lucky this was work-related. Or,” he shrugged, “she’s pretending she believes that, at least. With the way Theo shot out of here, no one with two brain cells to rub together would actually buy that.”

Kieran sighed. “We fought.”

“No shit.” Dorian watched him pace back over to the desk.
