The next four days were the most miserable of all my adventure. After scouting around all morning, I realized I was on the island Iâd glimpsed from the reef, cut off from the coast by half a mile of impassable, open water. From a hilltop on the south side of the isle I could see a distant village on the mainland. During the day I watched the trails of smoke rising from the cottage chimneys, and at night I could make out their lamps, glinting in the dark. But the village might as well have been on the moon, for all the help it could give to me.
My hunger was terrible. I would have starved but I remembered that shellfish could be eaten. Wading out to the shoreline rocks, I dislodged a pocketful of limpets with a stone. Back on the beach I sucked them out of their shells, raw, salty and cold. The feel of them slipping down my throat was revolting but they eased the hunger.
