CHAPTER 8

Visiting Hours

The RV’s overhead air conditioner blew cool air on the patient, who was starting to awaken. Juan felt groggy and weak. His shoulder hurt but not as bad as it had before. He looked around the room, sat up, and discovered his left arm was connected to an IV. He reached over with his right hand and got ready to pull it out, but the doctor walked in.

“I wouldn’t do that just yet,” Doctor Jess suggested as she put on a set of surgical gloves.

Juan looked up at the woman. “What is it?”

She examined the wound. “It’s an antibiotic to help with infection.”

Juan’s eyes widened. “I have an infection?”

The doctor cocked her head to the left. “Yes, but this will help. You smelled like you swam in a sewer when you got here.”

Waters around private boat slips were polluted with oil, gas, and trash from the boats secured to the docks. Juan knew of the sewer she spoke about. “Yeah, well, I had to make a quick exit and didn’t have a lot of options at the moment.”

“No need to explain. The people I treat never seem to have many options, and that’s why I can still practice medicine,” the doctor replied.

Juan nodded. “I understand… I need to get going. How much longer before I can be on my way?”

The doctor grabbed the IV bag and turned it toward herself. “Thirty minutes.”

“Good. I have to leave—”

Suddenly, someone knocked on the RV door. Both patient and doctor turned toward the front of the RV with surprised expressions spread across their faces.
