Chapter Three

STAFFORD RIDLEY

I knocked on Kevin’s door, my heart beating so loudly I was surprised none of his neighbors had peeked out their doors to see what was going on. I wiped my clammy hands down the sides of my jeans as I waited. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d been so nervous about a date, but of course, this wasn’t just any date. It was a first date, and it was with Kevin. I’d dreamed about this moment a lot over the last couple of years, hoping to one day make it a reality and now the time had finally come, I was terrified of screwing it up.

We hadn’t seen much of each other over the past week; however, we’d texted several times, sometimes about funny things that had happened at work and sometimes with things that led to more in-depth conversations that were too long to type. Whenever we got into that situation, one of us would call the other and we’d end up talking late into the night. He was fun and thoughtful and easy to talk to. Sometimes it scared me how much I liked him.

The door swung open, and Heaven help me, but he even looked better than I’d imagined. Dressed in black slacks and a royal blue, long-sleeved button-down shirt that fit him perfectly, he looked like he’d stepped right out of the pages of GQ magazine. His hair was perfectly styled, and I was delighted to see he’d kept the scruff along his jaw.

Having him in front of me brought a sense of calm and my earlier nerves vanished in the blink of an eye. I reached out, running the backs of my fingers over his jaw, enjoying the way it tickled my skin and feeling amazed I was allowed to touch him that way. I liked the way he leaned into my touch in a movement so natural, he didn’t even seem to realize he was doing it. I smoothed my thumb over his cheeks. Though some bruising remained along his cheekbone, the swelling had gone away completely.

“Does it hurt still?”

“Not too bad. Once in a while, I forget and rub my eye and that sucks, but it doesn’t bother me much other than that.”

“That’s good. You look amazing, by the way.”

Kevin took a step back, giving me a slow, appreciative look. “I could say the same about you. You always look hot but seeing you all dressed up is something else entirely.”

“You think I’m hot, huh?” I smirked.

He waggled his eyebrows at me. “Hot enough to light a fire.”

I stepped forward, crowding him in the doorway and forcing him to look up at me. “The only fire I want to light is yours.” His pupils dilated before my eyes, the irises turning so dark they were nearly black. “But first, dinner.”

His head fell forward, landing on my chest as he let out a long-suffering moan. “You’re trying to kill me, aren’t you?”

I threw my head back and laughed. “No way. I want you very much alive.
