Chapter Twenty-One

Phoenix

I was right to be worried.

This is chaos! Shortly after Clair left, Hailey exited the bathroom, popped some baby bottles into the fridge, and commenced digging into my cabinets and shelves (I call them mine because I’m the one who mainly uses everything) like a woman on a mission. Clair returned about thirty minutes later, heavily laden with bags of snacks and multiple types of liqueur. I had a feeling that shit was about to get real.

And I was right.

It all started innocent enough. Since the guys loaded up into one vehicle, I ran out and grabbed Amanda’s luggage (she asked super sweetly, and the woman is pregnant with twins after all with a toddler that fought going to sleep in a strange place, so I couldn’t simply turn her down). After rifling through her bags, she walked into the kitchen carrying a baby monitor and slapped it down onto the counter before disappearing. Once she had everything settled and into place, the gloves came off, and the lingerie came out. Corsets (that she couldn’t wear anymore but that doesn’t mean she couldn’t show it off to her sisters, I inwardly glowed to be included in the grouping. I had always wondered what it would be like to have a sister. Apparently, it was a lot like playing dress up Plus Size Barbie), thongs, and skimpy barely there negligées oh my.

We passed those around for a bit while drinking some strong margaritas, laughing and commenting on each item. It was all a ruse to get me comfortable, and albeit a little bit tipsy, because when my cheeks became flushed and my body relaxed that’s when they sprung their trap.

Now I am sitting at the patio table with all three women staring at me waiting with bated breath to hear my answer to those freighting and horrid three little words. Truth or Dare. Why did I agree to this again? Why is the choice so difficult for me? I have no idea what question they would ask that I would have no choice to answer truthfully if I choose Truth, but the Dare is equally scary because Lord only knows what these women would have me do! Looking at their faces, anticipation lighting their eyes, I take in a deep breath and do something way out of my comfort zone.

“Dare.” My answer is barely a whisper, but they must have been straining hard to hear me because no one asks me to repeat myself.

“Finish your margarita in less than five seconds.” That was not what I was expecting, but still.

“Are you trying to get me drunk?” Hell, I’m already halfway there. A big drinker I am not. I eye my drink, it’s a little over halfway full. If I drink this all down in the time frame they gave me, I will be firmly in the land of feeling good and drunk in less than five minutes.

“Absolutely.” I snap my eyes to Hailey, then to Amanda, and finally to Clair as they each answer my question.
