CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

CARLY

“Who are you planning to do this with?” Rose demanded.

“A friend,” I said, having to spit out the word.

Rose picked up on it. “What kind of friend?”

“It doesn’t matter,” I said, gripping the phone tighter. “Rose. Please. My father knows I’m alive, and he’s getting close to finding me. The only way to make sure I’m truly safe is to put him away.”

She hesitated. “Carly, I don’t know. I’m not sure James will even agree to see you, let alone help. And he definitely won’t do it for me.”

“He’ll do it for Jed,” Neely Kate said.

“Neely Kate!” Rose protested.

“Carly’s right,” Neely Kate told her. “If her father is close to finding her, then she’s not safe. We were hoping to neutralize him with the big bust, which didn’t happen. We need to help her come up with something else.”

“She can’t face her father with a questionable friend. She needs to be with someone she trusts. She needs to be with us,” Rose said. “Carly, come to Henryetta.”

Wyatt shook his head and mouthed, No.

“I can’t,” I said, even though I wondered if I should try to ditch Wyatt and do just that. But I couldn’t let on that I was considering it. I needed to make Wyatt trust me. “I’m fine, Rose. Really. I need to do this alone.” Then I quickly added, “With my friend.”

Both women were silent for several seconds.

“Let me call Jed,” Neely Kate said. “Give me your number so I can call you back.”

I didn’t have the number for the burner. I glanced up at Wyatt, who had, other than mouthing his refusal to go to Henryetta, remained silent during the call.

He gave me a dark look, then grabbed a piece of paper from the bed and handed it to me. It was the paperwork that had come with the phone, and it had the number on it.

“You ready?” I asked.

“Yeah.”

I gave her the number and she read it back.

“I’m going to call Jed now,” Neely Kate said, “then I’ll call you right back. When are you looking to do this? Next week?”

“Today.”

“Today?” she and Rose both said in alarm.

“My father knows I’m going by Carly Moore and that I’m in eastern Tennessee,” I said. “It’s only a matter of days before he finds me.”

I heard a baby coo in the background and Rose make a hushing nose.

“I’m not sure they’ll be able to get you in today,” Neely Kate finally said. “They have to do a background check and—”

“It has to be today,” I said. “Tomorrow at the latest. My father is closing in.” And so were the state police. Once they caught up to us, I’d lose my opportunity to see Skeeter. Not only would Skeeter refuse to see me, but law enforcement would be suspicious of my request.

Something else occurred to me: there was no way Marco could be involved with any of this. If Marco wanted any kind of career in law enforcement, then he couldn’t be any part of meeting a man in Arkansas who had worked with one of head members of an international crime syndicate.
