WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Why did we bake the sand?

How does the sand feel? Is it coarse?

Does the sand maintain its shape? Why or why not?

What will happen if you use flour instead of play sand?

What will happen if you use orange or grapefruit juice on the sandcastles?

How It Works:

I found out the hard way that wet sand mixed with baking soda gives you a gross, clumpy mixture. I decided that I had to bake the sand for about 30 minutes in order to remove all of the water molecules from the sand. This seemed to work really well, but my best castles resulted from sand that was baked for 1 hour. I have such a hard time waiting to do science!

I love our sand because it has this fluffy texture that comes from the bubbles in the dish soap. If you want softer sand, you can add more dish soap. The soap is actually the most important part of this recipe because it is the reason our entire mixture sticks together. This happens whenever a molecule has both a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic side (like soap). Let’s break these words down: hydro means “water,” phobic means “afraid of,” and philic means “fond of.” So we have one side of the molecule that likes to bond to water and one side that does not want to be anywhere near water, giving us a fluffy, soft sand perfect for Foaming Sandcastles.
