Chapter Twenty-Four
Justin lay beside Matt who was still sleeping, and thought of the days when he had hurried to get ready so that he could meet him on time at IHOP. Now he was lying next to him in Mattâs apartment, sharing a queen-sized bed. They had both finished their respective shifts and decided to meet here after work, made easier by Justin having his own car. He now understood about lovemaking, and that his night with Lili didnât compare to how he felt with Matt when they were together and exploring each other in a way that he couldnât have imagined a scant week before. He was scared at first, but Matt was seasoned and patient, and would not force anything until Justin was ready to accept.
Matt stirred and opened his eyes. He looked directly at Justin after gaining his bearings from a restful sleep. âGood afternoon, handsome man,â said Matt. âYou do know youâre very special to me, donât you?â
âYes, I doâ¦as you are to me.â
âI still canât believe it,â said Matt, lying on his side. âI was just looking to make a friend with someone I remembered from tenth grade. The whole idea that you could be a lover never crossed my mind. I had no idea it would lead to thisâ¦with you here next to me.â
âI know. I finally feel like Iâve been set free,â said Justin, reaching over to hold Mattâs hand. âI remember the night at the warehouse, and I was jealous of those on the dance floor because they felt secure in their own skinâ¦and itâs taken me twelve years of burying stuff and one month of a new opening to get there. I must be a slow study or something. What was your journey like once you knew?â
âOuchâ¦Thatâs what it was. Nothing pleasant to recount. A father who cut me off once he was onto me, and a mother who supported me rather than stay with him for doing that to their only son.â
âThey divorced over you? You never said that before.â
âYes. Mom told him if his family didnât include me, then hers would. It really threw him for a loop. He thought I was out to embarrass him in front of his troops. But still, it was easier to come out in Europe back thenâ¦not so much in the closet like here. Dad still doesnât get it, and I accept that. Of course, therapy helped, and Momâs been wonderful. Sheâs always been there for me.â
âIf my mom and dad were alive, this wouldâve been as hard for them as what I put them through,â said Justin. âThey were hardcore Catholics, and I was raised to think it was vileâ¦a sin to all that was holy. But this feels rightâ¦and I believe my parentsâ souls are okay with it. Theyâre not looking at it through human eyes anymore.â
âThat makes sense, but itâs still something I keep to myself. Most still have a hard time with it,â said Matt. âSo you listen politely when people talk and discreetly turn away when someone tells a âfaggotâ joke.
