Chapter Ten

Charlie balled up his fist and hit the demon masquerading as a man in the face so hard he cracked bone. The demon’s head snapped back as black blood flew from his nose, staining Charlie’s t-shirt. Charlie looked down as the blood seeped into the fabric and fury rose within him. It was his favorite shirt, the shirt she’d worn the day she left and the demon had managed to fuck it up.

The demon cackled, its pitch unnaturally high as it taunted him.

“For fucks sake, Charlie, you’re not going to get anything out of him that way,” Roland said, stepping up beside his brother and laying a hand on his shoulder.

He wouldn’t. He knew that, but it felt damn good beating the fuck out the demon, especially after the night he’d had. He cocked his fist back and hit the demon again before turning towards his brother.

“We’ve been at this for weeks, and none of these fuckers will talk.”

“That’s because they don’t know anything,” a voice he hadn’t heard in years spoke up.

He turned toward the sound to find Peiri standing there, her hands on her hips, her purple eyes staring daggers at Roland.

“About time you showed up,” Roland spat out.

She shrugged as if she couldn’t be bothered, but Charlie could see the emotion in her eyes. She still cared about his brother, more than she’d like to admit and he couldn’t say he blamed her. Roland was a good man, when he wasn’t a complete asshole and they’d been together so long Charlie thought he’d heard wedding bells. That was before Roland called it quits. Just like that, with zero explanation. At first, he’d thought Roland an idiot but the more he thought about it, the more he respected the man’s actions. It wasn’t fair to drag the girl along when he’d had no intention of spending his life with her, and in the end, whether she knew it or not, he’d done her a huge favor.

That, however, didn’t stop the angry glares she passed him every time she was in his presence.

“Don’t you ever think I have better things to do than to come when you call?” She passed him a look that was pure evil before turning her attention to Charlie. “Anyway, I’m here and I don’t think you’re going to like what I have to say.”

Charlie grimaced at that. Like anything she’d have to say could be worse than the fact Justice was away, and with his brother of all people and there was nothing he could do about it.

“Laine put the price on her head,” Peiri stated, lacking any kind of emotion behind words Charlie hadn’t expected to hear. “And if what I’m hearing is correct, it might be better to let Laine have her.”

Charlie shook his head, hoping she’d been mistaken. When he could see she was not, anger gripped him so violently he balled his hands into fists. His nails bit at his palms, drawing blood. Peiri was lucky she was woman. More than that, she was lucky she was a witch who he’d come to respect over the years.
