When Badge called to let Sassy know that he had essentially dismissed McMurphy from the department, she snarled, “Yeah, right.”

Her blasé response unnerved Badge. He had expected her to be ecstatic.

Just in case she hadn’t understood, he reiterated, “McMurphy has been taken care of. He won’t be causing you any more problems.”

“Cut the shit, Badge,” Sassy said sarcastically. “You don’t have the balls to just get rid of him. You want to tell me what really happened?”

Badge sighed, then said, “Okay, but remember, this has to stay between—”

“Look, Badge. Give it to me straight and fast—and remember, you don’t call the shots around here. I do. You got that?” Sassy interrupted.

In Sassy’s eyes, Badge and Junior were like two peas in a pod, though she had to admit Badge had a bigger “pod.” They were safe, stupid, good little boys who did whatever she told them to do—and it annoyed her when they refused to keep their traps shut!

Screwing and sucking to get what she wanted had always come naturally for Sassy. She liked the power rush she got when men bent to her will—but she detested guys with no balls—like that nutless Junior or that sniffling coward called Badge.

Badge was relieved when he finally got off the phone. Sassy hadn’t taken the news anything like he thought she would. He hoped she had gotten a dose of the clap from him. It would serve her right. He was also glad he hadn’t gone to her office to give her the news. She would have chewed him out even longer in person.

Agnes was upset when Badge showed up late for lunch at home. “I suppose something came up, huh?” she asked. “And I suppose you didn’t think to call me and tell me you were going to be late?”

Sipping a cup of coffee, Badge tried to act cool and calm as he reminded Agnes that he was headed to Mankato for a convention later that afternoon and would be gone overnight.

“Why don’t you drop whatever you’re up to and come along?” Badge urged. “It’d be nice to spend some time together.”

He knew Agnes hated venturing from the house into uncharted territory, but it never hurt to ask. It was the best way to keep her suspicions at bay.

After pausing a few moments, he asked again. “So what do you say? Would you like to go to Mankato with me?”

I can’t go,” Agnes replied almost apologetically. “You know how much my stomach hurts, so why do you even ask?”

Still playing the game, Badge asked, “Well, would you like me to pick you something up for your tummy?”

Badge smiled at his private thoughts. Nothing was going to rob him of the pleasure and anticipation he was feeling at that moment. He was closing in on the object of his desire, and it made anything bearable, even facing Agnes and Sassy on the same day. Robin was so young, pretty, and naive! It was almost going to be too easy.

“Do you need me to pick you up anything before I go?" he asked again.
