Chapter Twelve
Jane licked her lips and felt another thrill at the taste there. Miriam was asleep, her arm against Janeâs, spreading warmth where they touched. Jane didnât blame her for falling asleep, since sheâd probably been awake ever since she got the call from the bastard killer. But she didnât know when she would ever be able to sleep again. Every time she closed her eyes, she was afraid she would drift off again and this time she would never wake up. She knew she was alive. She knew sheâd survived. Miriam had proven that to her - twice, actually - but the fear was still there.
She licked her lips again and couldnât help but smile despite everything. She looked over at Miriam, who was lying on her back next to her. She was naked, such a distracting sight. The lamp on the other side of the bed was still on, and it cast golden shadows across her face and other parts of her anatomy that Jane couldnât believe she was allowed to look at. But considering she had touched and kissed most of those places in the past hour...
Jane didnât know how long she was staring, but apparently it was long enough for Miriam to sense she was being watched even in her sleep. Her eyelids fluttered open and she saw Jane, then she squeezed them shut and pressed the back of her hand against one of them.
When she dropped her hand, she looked at Jane again. âWhatâs wrong?â
âNothing,â Jane said. âIâm sorry if I woke you.â
Miriam shook her head. âNo. I sleep light. You could have just breathed wrong and it wouldâve been enough.â She looked around for her watch or an alarm clock. âWhat time is it?â
âI donât know.â
âYou should try to sleep.â
âI think Iâve slept enough for a little while.â
Miriam looked at her, her eyes focused now. âRight. Sorry.â
âIt doesnât mean you have to stay awake. You stayed up watching over me. You deserve to rest, too.â
âIt still feels rude.â
She sat up, realized she was still naked, and pulled her legs up against her chest. She wrapped her arms around them and faced forward. Jane sat up as well, taking her pillow with her and holding it against her chest.
âDo we need to talk about it?â
Miriam looked at her. âI donât know. I was kind of in a fugue state. You said nothing after waking up feels real because you accepted you were going to die. I think everything Iâve done tonight is because I felt the same way. I thought Iâd lost you. And I didnât even have you. I donât even know if I want you...â She flinched. âI-I just mean--â
âI understand,â Jane said.
âI donât know what happened tonight. I know I donât regret it. But for now...â She waved her hand. âI think thatâs all I can say for sure.â
âFair. Iâm willing to leave it up to you, what happens next. Youâre the one with the family. If this is too much, or too weird, or if youâre just not interested--â
âI am interested.
