The clear lock screen of my phone shone back at me, showing me absolutely sweet fuck all, just like it had the entire day. I turned the device over in my hand while I held my office phone to my ear.

I wasn’t sure when they would call or how they’d get in touch. I’d requested a phone call to either the office directly or to my private phone. I’d sent off the email this morning before the sun had risen, before Lucky had stirred, while she slept in my bed with her hair fanned on the pillows around her. I’d heard nothing back and I was losing the incredibly small amount of patience I had left.

“Yes, Mr. Landis, I can absolutely see how the shift in dates could disrupt some of your travel plans. Though I do feel obligated to mention that the company is paying for those particular flights.” I rubbed at my eyes, leaning back in my office chair and wishing for the fortieth fucking time today that I was doing anything else but taking phone calls from all the executives about moving the New York holiday event from the end of this week to the end of next.

“Tell you what, Landis. How about we bump you from business to first class as an apology for the inconvenience? – Perfect, I’ll have Felicity send through your updated flights. – Look forward to seeing you too.”

God, I wished he wasn’t such a wet noodle. Mark Landis was one of the few stuffy older men with too much money that I could actually stand.

I took a breath and typed out a quick message to Lucky, pressed send and told myself it was stupid for her not to have my number for work emergencies.
