March 1, 1968

The sun is out and it is warm. I left LZ Jane by chopper to go down near Hue. LZ Jane was in a bad location and proved difficult for the military to get supplies to it.

March 2, 1968

It rained today but I was inside a building because I still can’t go to the field. I’m glad we had a building to stay in. All this rain has really messed up my feet, and I still can’t put my boots on. I don’t know when I’ll be able to go out again.

SALLY

LZ Sally was approximately seven and a half miles northwest of Hue, and 1.8 miles south-southeast of An Lo Bridge. Sally was a nice high, dry spot with nothing there. Railroad tracks ran through it and parallel to Highway One. We learned that the 1st Cavalry was the first US unit to establish position there; the camp would eventually be home to the headquarters of the 101st Airborne.

Construction started in earnest on February 28, 1968, with our guys tearing up the railroad tracks to use the material for bunkers. But when the Vietnamese found out we were ruining the railroad, they put a stop to it. Despite that blip in the plan, though, construction continued and I enjoyed helping with the setup of Sally. The light-duty tasks were things I liked, but my mind stayed in the field—more importantly, with the guys in the field.
