CHAPTER SEVEN

Joey

My phone chimes with a text message as I wait for the elevator. When I open it, it’s from a number not saved in my phone. Reading it, it can only be from one person.

Hitting “Save to Contacts,” I add “July” as his contact info.

Me: Get some rest.

It’s all I can think to respond with.

My phone pings again, that was fast.

When I look down, I have six missed messages from Emily. Crap, she’s been waiting on me this whole time. I completely forgot.

Emily: Where are you?

Emily: I thought you said you were on your way out.

Emily: Is everything OK?

Emily: I’m getting worried.

Emily: Saw a couple of firefighters from Station 26, they have confirmed you aren’t dead.

I can’t help but laugh at that one.

Emily: Don’t mind me out here. Just waiting until you are done flirting with the very hot Mr. July.

The elevator pings and the doors open.

Me: On my way out.

I send it as the doors close.

Nothing comes back from Em as I ride the elevator down to the first floor. Walking through the sliding door entrance, she is sitting in the car at the curb, waiting.

Opening the passenger car door, I apologize. “I’m so sorry.”

“I’m not worried about the sorrys. I’m wanting all the information on Mr. July.” Emily gives me a wicked smile.

“What are you thinking we did?” I ask her, laughing. “It’s a hospital, nothing like what’s going through your mind happened, Em.” I shake my head in disbelief at my friend, putting my seatbelt on.

She’s turned in her seat facing me. “You are telling me nothing happened?”

“I went in, made sure he was all right. He did get hit by a car.”

“And that’s all?”

She looks disappointed. What was she expecting me to tell her? I went in and jumped on top of him? This woman!

“Can we go home? I’m exhausted.” I place my head back against the seat’s headrest and give her my best pleading look, hoping she will just drop the subject.

“Did you at least get his number?”

“Em!”

Her hands go up in a surrender fashion and she turns herself to face the steering wheel. “All right, all right. I was just asking.”

Looking over her shoulder, she pulls away from the curb.

I turn my head to look out the passenger window. Shrugging, I add, “I mean, he is one hell of a kisser.”

I’m thrown forward, my seatbelt locking around me, as Emily hits the brakes hard. “You kissed him?!” she shouts at me.

“Damn, Em. I’ve already been tossed around enough today. Can you not try and cut me in half with the seatbelt?”

Completely ignoring the fact that we are stopped in the middle of the parking lot, she continues, “You guys kissed? What else aren’t you telling me? Was it good? I mean I’m sure it was great. Can’t look as good as him and be a bad kisser.”

“Em, we need to get out of the middle of the road.”

“I could care less about where we are or what I’m blocking. Spill it.”

I love this woman so much.
