Chapter 11

Kale and Bryal moved through the forest at pace. They got close to the treeline by the water and followed it towards the caves. Moving silently, and with confidence, they knew how important this was. They had been entrusted by Mirka to make sure the way forward for the others was safe.

So far nothing had crossed their path, and nothing seemed unusual or out of place. Neither of them had their weapons drawn as they could move quicker without them.

Kale turned to Bryal and pointed into the distance and nodded. They were close to the caves now and running side by side. Kale turned back to face the way they were moving and was caught in a vice like grip. Bryal suddenly aware of the danger moved in to help his friend with incredible speed. He wasn't fast enough though as another arm grabbed him by the neck and lifted him off the ground.

Both tribesmen struggled and fought, but neither could free themselves from Tolldruck’s grip.

‘You’re in a hurry. You almost took me by surprise.’ Tolldruck said moving his stare over both of them.

He held them off the ground effortlessly, tightening his grip slightly causing both men great pain.

‘Where are you going in such a hurry?’ Tolldruck asked.

Bravely neither man replied. Tolldruck squeezed harder almost crushing their necks.

‘Where are the others? I know you’re not out here alone.’

‘You’re scouting? Is that the best you can do?’ Tolldruck replied.

‘We were sent out to look for the enemy before the others left. To make sure it's safe.' Bryal replied. His voice had a raw rasping sound to it.

‘Tell me, did you encounter a small force of goblins and trolls on this scouting trip?’ Tolldruck asked.

The two men looked at each other for a split second, but it was long enough for Tolldruck to know Bryal was lying. Without another thought, he snapped his neck and threw him to the ground.

‘Let’s try again.’ he said to Kale.

‘What are you doing out here without the others?’ he continued.

‘Making sure the path is clear.’ Kale said.

‘Did you see the trolls?’ Tolldruck asked.

Kale nodded his head in response.

‘Where are they now?’ Tolldruck asked, relaxing his grip some more to allow Kale to answer.

‘They’re all dead.’ Kale smiled as he spoke.

‘All of them? Are you sure?’ Tolldruck asked.

Again, Kale nodded his head wearily and smiled defiantly.

‘If they’re all dead, why do you need to check the path?’ Tolldruck asked.

‘Something else here.’ Kale’s voice had begun to sound distant as the constant pressure on his neck took effect.

‘What was it?' Tolldruck asked.

‘We never saw it, but it was there.’

Tolldruck stared into Kale’s face, smiled then crushed the life out of him in an instant. He dropped the lifeless body to the ground. It would seem that Graff had been killed unless the coward had managed to avoid the fight once again. Tolldruck was interested in the
