Helene came round to a splitting headache and the prickle of coarse material against her cheek. Trying to gather her wits, she sat up; panic and anger mingling as she gradually remembered the scene in the study. But where was she now? Screaming in anger and frustration, she rattled the bars in a mad fury of anguish and rage. But no one came. Her voice, muffled by the thick damp walls, faltered and faded to a whisper. Helene Birencourt sank onto the thin mattress in tears, dreading what the future might bring.
