âDid you enjoy the evening?â Mitchell inquired.
We had been sitting in the car in silence as he drove through the streets of Chicago back to my small apartment. I wasn't sure how to reply. Yes, I had enjoyed the evening. I always enjoyed an evening spent with my friends and their husbands and, truth be told, with Mitchell. However, at the end of dinner, I had felt that sudden pool of energy, sexual energy, or lust as some would call itâ¦or chemistryâ¦whatever, and it made me uneasy.
I may have been in control of my empath gift, but even I couldn't bear the torture it would cause if Mitchell was sleeping with one of my friends. I was sure that sexy innuendo chatter was for Chloeâs benefit. It certainly hadnât been for mine, had it? Why does Mitchell need Chloe when I am technically in his bed, or he's in mine? I was constantly warring with my conscience on that very point. But although the thought of a relationship with Mitchell was often the stuff of my dreams, I held no illusions that I played even a small part in his. He was the kind of man who needed a perfect Tessa or a sunny Miranda or even a smart and sexy Chloe, and I was none of those things, nor did I want to be. I told him the truth when I said I was happy. I enjoyed being me, not occasional male companionship wasnât welcome. Who was I kidding? Youâve practically grown cobwebs down there since you first met Mitchell. No other man compares, dammit!
âAre you all right, Sadie?â Mitchell asked suddenly.
âYes. I enjoyed the evening. I'm sorry, I was just lost in my thoughts,â I stammered.
âWhat thoughts?â
âMy mind wandered as it does from time to time,â I explained with a soft chuckle. âMy sweet friends and how lucky they were to find love: Miranda with Reed, Tessa with Jerome, and Agnes with Johnnie after all these years. Do you know Agnes and Johnnieâs story?â
âYes.â He smiled. âKimy told me all about how they had found each other thanks to a senior center prom hosted by Miranda. They were able to be reunited after all these years.â
Now, there was a safe topic: Kimy. âThe two of you are very close despite being far apart most of the time, aren't you?â
He glanced at me and then looked back out the windshield before peeking into the rearview mirror, picking up his speed a little. âI guess we are. We practically raised each other. Sheâs a good egg.â
âI know. In her own way, she worries as much as I do about the rest of us. I'm lucky to have such great friends.â
He peered up at the review mirror again. âYou have more than friends, love; they are your family. Sometimes, family isn't just blood and some DNA; it's the bond thatâs forged together. That's why so many people in the military after they retire, maintain those friendships, that companionship. It's hard not to stay friends when you know someone's got your back.
