“What do you think?” Jefferson asked softly, looking back at the prisoner.

Ramsey was still seated behind the long table. He pulled thoughtfully on his cigarette, staring blankly through the smoke. Brogan made a motion toward his belt, hitching up his pants. “Ask me three weeks ago, and I’d have said he’s crazy. But with all the shit that’s been going on recently.” Brogan raised his eyebrows, then sighed. “I don’t know. There’s a part of me that believes him … you know?”

“I know what you mean.” Jefferson checked his watch. “Listen, it’s still early. Why don’t we go and check out the pit. See if anything’s down there.”

Brogan nodded, rapping his knuckles lightly on the table and turning to leave.

Behind them, Ramsey suddenly said something inaudible.

“What’s that?” Jefferson asked, walking back toward the man.

“I said,” Ramsey began slowly, “you two ain’t the only ones who’s been asking me these same kinds o’ questions.”

Curious, Jefferson approached the prisoner. “What do you mean?”

“About two months ago, I had a guy come in here asking the same questions as y’all asked me. What about the pit and all, what kind o’ things going on in there.”

“Who was that?”

Ramsey shook his head. “Don’t know, never gave his name. Didn’t say shit to him.”

“What did he look like?”

“He was elderly, looks like he was real wealthy from the clothes he was wearing …”

“Yeah …”

“He was in a wheelchair, an electric kind.”

Lyerman. Lyerman had come out there and asked questions about the pit. How was he involved? Jefferson stood for a moment thinking about all the connections that seemed to be coming together. Lyerman, Older, the Galla; they all seemed to be pointing to something, something that was buried inside the pit.
