The Ministry of Silence

During a retreat for priests, the retreat director asked everyone to break up into groups of three. They were then asked to share their deepest, darkest secrets with one another, things they had never shared with anyone else before.

A Dominican, after much hesitation, told the other two in his group that he was an alcoholic. He’d been ashamed to tell anyone that he drank all the time and just couldn’t kick the habit. He was glad he could share this in the safety of this small group and now felt better and freer.

A Franciscan also hesitated, but, sure he could trust the other two, told them that his problem was gambling. He was unable to control his urge to gamble and was deeply in debt. He was very ashamed of this habit but grateful he could finally share it with fellow priests.

It was the Jesuit’s turn. He thanked them for their openness and honesty, admitting that he, too, was ashamed by his own problem. He’d been working on it for years but hadn’t yet gotten it under control. Despite hypnosis and other therapies, nothing had helped him overcome his compulsion to gossip.
