“I am sorry.” He rubbed his forehead wearily. “Lacey left to go and collect some stuff at the apartment building she used to live. I have been trying to reach her and she is not picking up.”

“Isn’t that place in the heart of downtown?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you offer to go with her?”

“I was doing some work.”

“On a Sunday? I know you are a workaholic darling, but you just got married yesterday. Surely the work could have waited?”

Jeremiah picked up the glass of bourbon he had poured and took a sip. He had gone downstairs to grab a sandwich and had stood in the doorway as he recalled how she had looked in that dress and the pleasure that had been on her face on seeing him. He had walked out of the room without getting the sandwich. Now he could feel the nausea roiling in his stomach from lack of food. “I wanted to get it done before tomorrow.” He paused.

“How long are you going to be in town?”

“Another couple of weeks. Why?”

“I need a favor.”

“Anything darling.”

“I need you to show Lacey the ropes.”

This time she was the one who paused. “I am not sure what you mean by that.”

“She comes from a different background and is not used to…. – “ he took another sip.

“She is not used to the way things work in the society we run in. I am not sure I am the best person to do that darling. She more or less told me off at the wedding dinner.”

“What did you say to her?” Jeremiah asked sharply.

“I more or less called her a gold digger.”

“Dammit Barb!” he exploded.

“I am sorry. Anyway, I called to apologize and to ask her out to lunch as a peace offering. I do not know if she will accept.”

“Try and persuade her. I have several functions lined up for the rest of the month.”

“And you are not sure she will be able to play hostess.” Barbara surmised. “I need to ask you something as a friend and would appreciate you not biting my head off.”

“Go ahead.”
