So, to start off with, all of them are unmarked, as we can tell from all the 0 after the objects. The next step is to mark the objects with a connection to the stack by changing the 0 to a 1.

But itâs not enough to just mark the ones with a direct connection to the stack. Right now, the object referred to by Person p1 would be eligible for GC even though it is reachable. This is also why the references of each object are also traveled and marked, until there are no more nested objects. Figure 4.6 shows what our example looks like after the marking phase.
