THE TONGUE HAS DESTRUCTIVE POWER (3:5B–10)

The rest of this paragraph develops the evil power of the tongue to act contrary to God’s way and utilize its destructive power. There are three parts: It resembles a small flame that destroys acre after acre (vv. 5b–6); it is incredibly difficult to tame (vv. 7–8); and it is antithetical to God’s creation in that it blesses and curses at the same time (vv. 9–12). The three images in verses 3–5 detail the positive effects of the tongue, while the three in verses 6–12 detail its evil effects.
