Before the sun made enough light to see well, Jake had a quick cup of strong, black coffee and a biscuit. He began trailing Miguel again by going back to where he'd found the lost shoe. He carried it along in his pack and followed what tracks he found throughout the day without seeing a trace of blood marking the jagged stones. He decided Diablo had excellent hooves. Perhaps his Arab heritage served him well.

Nearing dusk, his patience paid off. He'd gotten close enough to see a figure outlined against the distant sky, only for an instant, but he knew the chase neared its end. From now on, he'd have to be doubly careful, knowing the man ahead of him would lie in wait when Diablo went lame. Miguel would need to steal Jake's horse to continue his escape.

Jake found a place to stop for the night--a box canyon that had plenty of water, grass, and firewood. This time, he felt free to make a fire and have a solid meal. With so much ahead of him, he needed the rest and should be safe enough for this night but maybe not after.

He assembled cottonwood twigs, branches, and other deadwood. The dry stuff would burn hot and make little smoke, and that suited Jake. He made his evening meal of coffee, bacon, and biscuits. "Not as nice as yours, Hettie, but it'll have to do." He made his rude bed while murmuring his thoughts of how her thick, ropy hair curled around his fingers and the good way she smelled to him, all woman and sweet as honey. Remembering her warm smile and willing body, he chuckled softly. "You sure got me off the track, darlin', but it was worth every damned bit." He fell asleep with a smile on his lips, his head pillowed on his saddle.
