Back at The Valley, my next step was a transvaginal scan. Mike accompanied me to the appointment, which was performed downstairs within the hospital. The sonographer took photographs of my ovaries to see if the nasal spray had worked. Once the photos were taken, she printed them off, and I walked around the fertility department to hand them to Dr. Atalla to analyse.

“The nasal spray worked!” Dr. Atalla told us, we were over the moon.

The next step of the process was injections; I had to inject into the muscle between my back and buttock every night with 225 Fostimon. This contained urofollitropin, a form of natural sex hormone called follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). It was to help stimulate the production of eggs this had the same effects as natural FSH.

I was given the injections to administer at home. Abi showed me how to inject myself, in case I wanted to and showed Mike where on my behind, he would have to inject me. Some women injected themselves, but personally, I wanted Mike to inject me, as it was something we were doing together, plus I wasn’t flexible enough to reach the injection area.

I was prescribed the injections straightaway to take home, along with my yellow needle disposable box and a bag of two-needle types (blue and red) I would use the blue needle to draw up the medication into the syringe, and then the red needle would be the one inserted into the muscle above my buttock. The red needle needed to be thicker and longer, as the muscle was deeper than the subcutaneous layer of skin. Every night I would feel anxious around the time of the injections. I was not a fan of needles, and although all the blood tests had helped me to get used to them, this particular injection was extremely painful. The needle was thick and sharp, and I could feel the medicine as it entered my body. After the injection, I would have to rub it vigorously, as I would be left with a hard lump on my back that would then bruise, making the area tender and sore for the injection the following day. I tried a variety of numbing creams to help desensitise the area, but they didn’t help. I then tried ice cubes; amazingly, they worked. This made the whole process a bit more bearable. Some days I would cry when having the injection, the physical pain had built up, as well as my hormones and emotions. Some nights I would have a photo of my niece in front of me for inspiration, the photo would help distract me from the pain and give me hope that one day I would have my own child.

Once the follicles were big enough, they would be ready for collection. I underwent more blood tests and scans to check that everything was working, as it should be. I attended a few of these appointments alone since they were always during the day when Mike was working.
