Chapter 15

I spent the next day sporting a colossal case of the jitters that weren’t from my coffee addiction. The steak and wine the night before were wonderful, but I’d picked at my food, hardly eating any of it. I hadn’t even finished one glass of wine, and I hadn’t slept well either. I dreamed William had returned angry, and the next thing I knew, Freya had disappeared. I searched everywhere for her, but I couldn’t find her anywhere. I was frantic. Anytime I fell asleep, I had some variation of the same dream. I woke up with a start every time.

That morning, an enormous cup of coffee hadn’t improved my dreadful mood. I snapped at Charlie and walked out of Jena’s office when I disagreed with her. I just wasn’t myself.

“Hey.” When I looked up from the flower order in front of me, Charlie was leaning against the door frame with her arms crossed in front of her. “I know you’re worried and that’s why you’re crabby, but Jena and I both agree you should take the rest of the day off. Take a nap with Fay then go to the park. It’ll make you feel better.”

“Okay,” I said, sighing while I put my pen down. “I’m sorry. I didn’t—”

“Jena heard you pacing most of the night. She knows you didn’t sleep well. It’s okay. We all have our crappy days. Your dad was only supposed to babysit until lunchtime so you need to go up to feed Fay anyway.”

I didn’t argue. There was no point because Charlie was right. If I was lucky, I might get two or three hours to sleep while Freya napped, but I’d stared at the order in front of me for the last hour. I wasn’t getting anything done.

Charlie received a hug from me when I passed her on my way out of the door. “Thanks.”

“Don’t mention it. Y’all did practically the same for me when I broke up with Jensen, remember.”

She’d broken up with him before college, but we’d definitely helped keep her sane. Instead of arguing, I nodded and trudged up the stairs, dad’s voice becoming louder as I reached the top. I followed the sound into Freya’s room where he was lying on the floor covered from head to toe in toys. Freya held another above him, poised to add to the pile when she saw me.

“Mama!”

I picked her up and kissed her cheek. “Are you burying Grandpa? Where did you get that idea?”

“I have no clue.” Dad, chuckled, stood, and started tossing toys back in her basket. “She had a great time burying me one toy at a time, though.”

“Are you hungry? We have leftover steak.”

He straightened and leveled me with a look over his glasses. “Since when do you girls leave steak? I always have to guard mine with my life when I eat over here.”

I rolled my eyes. We weren’t that bad. “I wasn’t very hungry last night. I’m going to warm it up and thought I’d ask if you wanted to share.
