âDONâT LOOK NOW, but somebodyâs getting flowers, and Iâll bet a double mint mocha it isnât me.â Jill stood on tiptoe to see over the espresso machine and out the front window of the coffee shop. A minute later, the door opened and a man in a Franâs Flowers T-shirt came in carrying an arrangement of red roses. âIs there a Cannie Carmichael working here?â he asked.
âThatâs Cassie. Cassie Carmichael,â Cassie said.
The man glanced at the card. âLooks like Cannie to me, but itâs your name, so I guess you know.â He held out the flowers. âHere you go.â
âWho are they from?â Jill slid over to her, eyes alight. âRead the card. Read the card.â
Cassie set the vase on the counter and unpinned the card from the ribbon. Her heart was racing. Had Guy really sent her roses? And what did it mean if he had?
She slid her thumb under the envelope flap and popped it open, then drew out a handwritten card. Iâm the only man for you. Bob.
Jill was up on her toes again, trying to see over Cassieâs shoulder. âYou donât look too thrilled,â she said.
Cassie handed her the card. âTheyâre from Bob.â
âBob?â Jill read the card. âWhatâs this âIâm the only man for youâ crap? Isnât it supposed to be âyouâre the only woman for meâ?â
Cassie picked up the vase and headed toward the trash can. âEither way, the manâs delusional.â
âWait, wait.â Jill snatched the vase from her hands as she was preparing to toss it in amongst the coffee grounds and sugar packets. âJust because they came from a creep doesnât mean we canât enjoy them. Itâs not every day we get roses around this place.â
Jill put the rescued roses on a table by the window while Cassie tried to think what sheâd say to Bob when he called. And he would call. He wouldnât miss the chance to brag about his generosity and gloat over his supposed conquest. He probably thought all it took was a few flowers to send her running back to him.
âUh-oh. Now this is interesting.â
Cassie followed Jillâs gaze out the window and her spirits plummeted. A second floristâs van was parked in the loading zone and a woman in a pink smock was headed their way.
âBob must be desperate if heâs spending that kind of cash on you,â Jill said.
âIs there a Ms. Carmichael here?â The woman was almost hidden behind an arrangement of bright pink, orange and white flowers.
âIâm Cassie Carmichael.â Cassie stepped from behind the counter to accept the arrangement.
âWhat kind of flowers are those?â Jill asked.
âDaisies and passion flower.â The delivery woman smiled. âThe customer was very specific.â She winked. âYou are one lucky lady. I tell you, if I was ten years youngerâ¦â She waved and walked out the door.
Jill and Cassie exchanged glances. âThat sure doesnât sound like Bob,â Jill said.
âNo, it doesnât.â Cassie unpinned the card from the ribbon and brought it to her nose. Was her imagination working overtime, or did she detect
