Hours later, manning her Sweet Temptations booth at the carnival, Emma was still reeling from that kiss with Oliver. Her lips tingled and her body was giving off charged sparks. Yet her mind was simply confused. Her body she could understand; Oliver was ridiculously appealing—sexy bad-boy cop, ripped body, eyes that promised hot nights of sin, and a mouth that knew exactly how to make a woman beg.

And that was what warred with her brain. Oliver knew how to push her buttons because that was his nature. He was a playboy. From the moment he had pulled away from their friendship as a teen, he had morphed into the quintessential bachelor, sleeping his way through high school. Based on the talk of the town, up till recently his bedding ways hadn’t stopped. She could give in to her primal urges and satisfy the ache that pulled from within her core, but she didn’t want to be just another notch for him to mark off.

Emma wanted the dream. The doting husband, a kid or two, definitely a little dog. And she was getting up there in age. She didn’t want the meaningless fling.

She sighed, leaning against the booth, deep in thought.

A deep chuckle pulled her back.

Mike stood before her, his eyes twinkling. Emma was once again reminded of what could have been. Maybe Mike would have been the man for her, the one to create a future with. But then Oliver had ruined that possibility with his big fat lie about their coupledom. If Emma was being honest with herself, the memory of Oliver’s kiss had slayed any desire she had for any other man.

Damn him!

“Hey, Ems.” Mike was studying her with amusement.

“Hey, Mike.” She smiled brightly, not wanting to give away the direction of her thoughts.

“Thinking real hard there?”

“Oh you know, just the usual… how to save the world and bring back the unicorns.”

Mike laughed and Emma relaxed. She needed a normal conversation and Mike was a great guy. “So how was your date from the auction?”

Mike’s face twisted like he’d sucked on a lemon. He leaned in to whisper conspiratorially. “It was bad enough for me to call 911 for a rescue.”

Emma gasped and covered her mouth with a hand. “What happened?”

Mike ran a hand through his dark hair. She was once again struck by how handsome he was. And yet nothing now. No zing, no interest.

“She wanted to make me a home-cooked meal, which was great; who would say no to that? But she surrounded the interior of her house with candles and of course my first thought was that it was a fire hazard.”

“Obviously, Mr. Fireman.”

“Well, long story short, she gave us both food poisoning, then her hair caught alight from all the hair spray keeping it together, and if things couldn’t get worse, the ambulance arrived just as her septic tank burst.”

Emma threw her head back with laughter. “You have got to be kidding.”

“No, ma’am. Most traumatic date of my life.”

“Oh, you poor thing.” Emma slugged him on the arm.
