Liam was in the mood to celebrate, even with a mountain of issues casting an enormous shadow over him. He wasn’t ignoring his problems, just setting them aside for a moment so he could recharge his batteries, so to speak. It was one of the valuable lessons the men in Ferrante’s gang taught him a long time ago. You can’t control what problems come your way, so make sure your mind and body are ready for the challenge.

Gigi’s was busier than he’d ever seen the place. The bar was packed all the way around, and most of the booths were occupied. The new tables by the recently rebuilt front entrance were the most popular, with every seat filled by men and women in similar work attire. He figured there must be a factory near the bar. That was something he needed to ask about when it came time for summer work. The jobs always sucked, but the pay was respectable.

“Maybe we should go somewhere else?” Adora called out over the noise of the music blaring from the speakers along the ceiling. “This place is packed.”

Liam nearly agreed for a second, right until one of those problems held up their hand and waved. Valko. More specifically, Valko and the invisibility cloak. The man could pass through a place like this unseen, but there were limitations to the cloak. Being invisible would work against him as well, and a packed place like this would be impossible to navigate without bumping into people. Someone would notice his presence eventually, which made it a perfect place to relax.

“No, we’re good.”

A group of women with dark blue smudges on their cheeks rose at that moment, chattering while waving to the bar. They were leaving, so Liam motioned for Adora to sit down while he pulled all of their empty drinks to the edge of the table. A waitress came over within a minute to clean up the empties, and then took their drink orders. Adora ordered something he couldn’t even pronounce, leaving him to feel a bit like a simpleton for ordering an ale.

“I can’t believe you beat Heckly,” she laughed while glancing at a pair of minos men coming out of the bathroom. How they both managed to fit in the small room at the same time was another mystery, one that even magic would struggle to cover. “Although I’m starting to wonder how you managed to draw three elite minions in a row.”

“Maybe I didn’t shuffle the deck well enough. I’d apologize, but not to a jerk like that.”

“Please. He’s nothing compared to some of those guys. Heckly is pretty tame for a Drellon. Most of them believe every turpis should be their personal servants. Teiffons aren’t as bad. That’s why I’m glad that we have Neklamoor, and not a Drellon.”

“Like Charadie’s father?”

“Oh, he isn’t the headmaster at his academy. He’s just the majority owner. You’re right though. Their faculty is all Drellon, and eighty, maybe ninety percent of the students too. My application would go straight into the trash.
