It was a lot easier to find a payphone on Stradus than it was on Earth. In Boston, seeing a payphone was like discovering a fossil, requiring at least a few pictures on one’s phone. Liam actually passed three on his way to the park, because he wanted to test the chanrod and the new card without risking damage to Eva’s house. There was a phone at the park’s entrance that he used to call Neklamoor, who appeared out of nowhere the second he hung up.

“Will teleporting be a part of my tutoring?” he asked with a sly smile as the pair walked into the park to find a secluded spot.

“Master your basic spells first, Mr. Marshall. Now, you said something about the dolphin?”

“Yeah, Tenny, the girl who works at Silver Star, said that she was given a card with a dolphin on it as a free sample,” Liam replied, but held up the other card he bought to give the headmaster a visual reference. He didn’t want to hand it over without explaining the rules, and he still had his glove on, just in case. “She said that she used the card in the store and a baby dolphin appeared in her arms. It started growing like crazy, so she raced over to the academy and dumped it in the lake.”

“And now it is gone.”

“Yeah, I think these cards have a time limit to them.”

“May I see the card?”

“Sure, but keep your thumb off the actual picture,” he replied and held it out. Neklamoor must have been prepared, because he produced a pair of tweezers from his pocket and pinched the card within its prongs. The headmaster looked it over for a full minute before examining the back, then he held it up to his nose and took a whiff.

“The card has a strange smell to it. Was there something in your pocket?”

“No, it’s definitely the card. When I was counting down to use the other one, I moved my thumb around on it. It’s coated with something.”

“Interesting, but not nearly as interesting as what has been drawn on it.”

“What, they don’t have winged rabbits with unicorn horns on Stradus?” he asked, knowing full well that it wasn’t the case.

“None that I am aware of,” he replied and turned the card toward the sun to get a better view. “I’m having difficulty determining if someone drew on the card, or if the card came from a printing machine.”

“Oh, I didn’t even think of that.”

“I will have to examine it,” Neklamoor stated, pulled a small manilla envelope from his pocket, and dropped the card inside with the tweezers. Having it tucked away must have brought him some comfort, because the teiffon let out a long breath like he’d been holding it in. “Now, let me see the chanrod.”

You could say please, or ask.

Liam handed it over without speaking his mind, then stood back since he assumed the headmaster would test it. Neklamoor didn’t though. He merely turned it back and forth a few times, held it to his nose, and then hefted it twice before handing it back.
