He’d never stood this close to Jamie before, and now he wished he hadn’t. It wasn’t just the smell, which was atrocious, but the way he looked left Liam longing to run into the night screaming since it could just as easily be him next year. It looked like he hadn’t cut his hair or shaved since the day he was kicked out of school, and the sideways smile he offered as they approached proved that he hadn’t been brushing his teeth either. The raggedy jacket was lying on the shore, offering a glimpse of the last outfit the guy was wearing when they threw him out. It didn’t look like one year had passed though. More like twenty, or thirty, perhaps, because Jamie Atwater looked old enough to be Liam’s father.

“Hey, Jamie, right?” Liam started, just then realizing that he hadn’t figured out what he was going to say to the poor guy. Jamie whipped his head around to look at the water, then back, proving that his ears had a point to them. It made sense, because he doubted that a succubus could feed off of a turpis.

“Jamie, yeah, yeah,” Jamie nodded profusely, throwing his hair around while he smiled. “Jamie, yeah, yeah.”

“Well, I’m Liam, and this is Meenka,” he continued, pointing to himself, and then the teiffon as he introduced them. “It’s uh…it’s good to meet you.”

“Jamie, yeah, yeah. Liam, yeah, yeah. Meenka, yeah…no, no. No Meenka.”

“What?”

“I should have thought about that,” he sighed, turned his back to Jamie, and leaned in until his chin was over Meenka’s left breast. God, she smelled wonderful, and the need to bury his nose in her red hair was almost overwhelming. “It’s your horns. He probably thinks that you’re a succubus.”

“What?” she hissed a bit too loudly, then shook her head and dropped her voice. “I’m not a dirty little succubus. I’m a teiffon.”

“Yeah, I don’t think you’ll have much luck explaining that to him. Why don’t you go for a little walk? Not too far. Just to where I can still see you.”

“In case you need me to come rescue you from the water again?”

“Yeah, sure,” he chuckled and gave her a wink before backing up. She still looked mad about being confused for a demon, but she shook her head and stormed off. He waited until she was thirty feet away before turning around, only to see that Jamie had gone back to fishing. “So, catch anything yet?”

“Here fish, fish, fish,” Jamie chuckled with a beaming smile. “Here fish, fish, fish.”

Liam knew he wasn’t out here fishing just because he enjoyed it, or had all the time in the world to burn. He was here because it was his only way to get some meat to eat, which left him wishing that he hadn’t left all of his currabars in his dorm room.

“So, I was uh, I was hoping to talk to you about a few things. You went to Stratton Hall, right?”

“Stratton…home. Stratton home.”

“Yeah, it does feel like that, huh?”

“Miss Stratton.
