âCaptain, can you tell me where my dad is?â
As I made my way towards the gate to greet my family, it was such an overwhelming moment for me, and for them too, Iâm sure. Everything felt like a dream come true. I saw my wife standing there too. My brother and children were there too, and so was my good friend, Rick.
I know we werenât exactly a happy couple, and people could tell. But something about still being associated with my wife bothered me. To make things worse, I didnât know, but the press was there too.
Coincidently, my wife and I had the exact same colored shirts on â which screamed happy couple, but in reality, it was anything but. I didnât even know where we stood. I mean, I knew. But I wasnât entirely sure that she did.
I felt a bit out of place, and I definitely felt uncomfortable. I was supposed to be focused on my family, the people who mean the world to me. Instead, all I felt was confused. I was confused about what was going on with her. And had she completely forgotten that we were getting a divorce?
I walked towards them and hugged my daughter first. It was honestly the best feeling in the world. I was already expecting to get a bit emotional, but I wasnât exactly prepared to be crying.
I stepped out of Gate âAâ and immediately hugged my daughter. I cannot find the right words to describe how great it felt to be seeing those faces after I thought Iâd never get to see them again.
I felt like the luckiest man in the world. But at the same time, I couldnât help but think how terrible it must have been for Carlâs family. They didnât get to see him come back. I felt gutted to just think about the fact that they were never going to see him again.
This was an amazing moment for me. Unfortunately, my ex-wifeâs crocodile tears were starting to get to me. Seeing all the people I love standing there waiting for me was probably the best sight Iâve ever witnessed. I can surely say that not even the rescue made me feel as alive as hugging my loved ones did.
Even though I was thinking about Carl a lot, I didnât want to talk about him. I was still pretty shaken by all the trauma that led to losing him. A lot was going on in my mind at the time. My ex-wifeâs questionable behavior, the overwhelming joy of getting to hug my daughters again, my brothers were telling me how relieved they were and, most of all, the grieving of Carl that I never really got around to.
When I spoke to my brother Wesley afterward, he told me that heâd gotten to the airport a bit earlier, and my wife was there too. When he saw all the press waiting for my arrival, he asked her, âwhatâs with all the press?â and she said, âwell, Edwards got a story to tell.
