RORY (RUAIRÍ)

[Also Ruaidhrí] The word means ‘red king’ and is sometimes taken as equivalent to Roderick. It was the name of the last high king of Ireland, Rory O’Connor, who made peace with Henry II, and of a noted opponent of the English, Rory Oge O’More (d. 1578).

RYAN (RÍAN)

Though used mainly now as a surname, Rían meaning ‘little king’ was the name of several saints and warriors. Its use as a forename is more common outside Ireland.

S

SEAMUS (SÉAMAS)

[Also (older) Seumas] The Irish translation of James, an historical necessity thanks to Ireland’s fateful involvement with the unreliable Stuarts. Since it is a biblical name and existed in most European countries it was inevitable that Ireland should devise its own form. It was common among the Anglo-Norman settlers for the same reasons. It appears in Scotland as Hamish (like most anglicised Scottish names a vocative) and is still a widely popular name in both countries. It is often reduced to Shay.
