Chapter Nineteen

I’m watching the door leading to Marcus’s room, or more accurately, his cell. Part of me itches at having Brendan here in my space. I’m not sure what to think of him. When he contacted me about his brother, I was happy to assist. I have my own reasons to be here and an abuser crosses every line of mine. Now though...I have questions. Not just for him but for Marcus as well.

“Keegan, Brendan has a task for you.”

I do a double-take when I look over at Davin. He’s pale and walking uncomfortably, his hair is a mess, and while I’d say he looked well fucked in any other situation, it looks much different here. I immediately stand and go to help him, but the moment I reach for him, he flinches and stumbles back.

“Davin, are you alright?” I can’t help but think something has happened to him. He’s a sweet kid, not like the soldier I’d expect, certainly not with what I’m slowly learning about Brendan.

“I’m okay,” Davin bristles even as he won’t meet my eyes. “The boss has a job for you.”

I gesture for him to continue, and with quick words, he tells me about this Philip. By the time he’s done, I’m grinding my teeth. This is why I exist, to take out the trash that the cops don’t do shit about. I hesitate briefly as I’ll need another person with me, but Davin isn’t up to it. Not with the way he’s moving right now.

“Alright, I’ll need to take someone with me,” I hesitate briefly before realizing I have an opportunity here. “I’ll take Marcus.”

Davin’s eyes go wide. He shakes his head frantically at me. “No. I don’t think the boss would be okay with it. Marcus is supposed to stay here.”

“He won’t get away from me, especially with what we have on him. He’ll be useful, especially when I explain what happened. It sounds like there is quite a bond between those Boys.” I don’t mention that I need to know how deep that bond goes, and whether I’ll need to kill all of the Boys, or if they’re salvageable. Without putting my cards on the table, I don’t mention I need more information on Brendan as well. It may be time to clear out the whole town.

Davin looks like he’s going to run back to Brendan, but the moment he tries to move away, he cringes with pain, clenching his teeth in a desperate attempt to keep a whine in, but I notice. I notice everything, and while I may not do anything about it immediately, I file it away in my mind. I’ll find out his secrets later and deal with them as needed.

I don’t bother knocking on the door but stroll in. I’m not overly surprised to see Marcus in the middle of doing push-ups. From my research, this level of inactivity and captivity must be killing him. I have a file on each of the Boys. Marcus interested me the most, knowing he was in charge of the soldiers.
