Chapter Fourteen

Monica wanted to believe so desperately it was food poisoning. Even if that meant the Ribfest had to be dismantled then and there and a huge scandal for the city workers, along with her mother and stepfather’s cause, would soon follow, Monica wanted that instead. No one would be at fault that way, at least not directly. It would be a strange kind of accident, a twist of fate, an act of God or some form of higher power. Next year, they’d perform the correct ritual sacrifices, and everything would be fine. Ribfest would go on.

But as Monica remained utterly pristine and in good health, while Brooke couldn’t keep down water, Monica realized she had to face some facts: This sickness was not rooted in Ribfest. This was not food poisoning. This was something unique to Brooke, and the longer they waited in the emergency room, the more time Monica had to dwell on the past.

As a teenager, she believed she had no choice but to turn in Brooke the moment she found the ipecac. She had been scared, confused, and desperate. Mrs. Johnson had been there for her. Really, if Monica was honest, Mrs. Johnson sort of bullied her to snitch on her friend. She didn’t like that she’d done it—especially knowing what she knew now about Brooke’s home life, her mother, and well, Brooke’s later treatment through the hospital—but she’d done it. She was a kid. She made a dumb decision that had a kind intention—or at least a hasty one, made in fear.

But now? Now she was an adult. Even if Monica felt like a child as she waited with Brooke, desperate for the approval of doctors or nurses who walked by, she was an adult. She had to be here. She had to make the right decision.

What that was, though, she still had no idea.

She focused on Brooke the best she could. They checked in, described the symptoms, and when the nurse said it sounded like food poisoning, Monica fought for Brooke to be taken seriously. “My mother is a nurse here, and she’s already ruled that out,” Monica said. It was a white lie, but she was sure if her mother heard these symptoms by now and thought that Monica should do any different, she’d have a text from her mother. There was no text, so no food poisoning. When Monica told the nurse her mother’s name, there was a general consensus that, okay, they belonged here.

“It might still be a while, though,” the nurse warned. “Get comfortable.”

Three hours had gone by. It was well past the dinner hour. Monica had watched what felt like the same talk show on the wall TV in the waiting room for the first two hours; now it was a movie that seemed like a knockoff of something she wasn’t quite familiar with. The volume was low and the subtitles were on, but she couldn’t read. She was still too focused on Brooke, who was now throwing up every half hour.
