Kotori had met Koutarou when she was in the early years of grade school. Her brother, his friend, had brought him home.
âSo, this is Mackenzieâs little sister that Iâve heard so much about.â
âSheâs called Kotori.â
âMackenzie?â sheâd asked.
âWell, his name is Matsudaira Kenji, so Mackenzie for short.â
Sheâd chuckled. âI see. What a weird name.â
Their first meeting had been almost ten years ago, so Kotoriâs memories werenât all that clear, but she still had some strong impressions from it, which like him saying stupid things, but there had been a dark light in his eyes.
He seems lonely... she had thought at the time. She clearly recalled feeling that way when sheâd looked into his eyes. He had appeared aloof but friendly, yet deep down, he didnât accept others. Kotori hadnât understood all that back thenâit had taken years and an explanation from her brother. Even so, sheâd felt that something was wrong from a young age.
When Kotori told Kiriha that she felt that Koutarou seemed like a lonely person, Kiriha was surprised. She hadnât noticed that when first meeting him. âYour insight is very impressive, Kotori. It took me some time to notice the same.â
As Kiriha said that, she appeared a little sad to Kotori. She was sad that she hadnât been able to do the same thing Kotori had. Even more so since it concerned her beloved. But Kotori didnât agree.
âBack then, Kou-niisan wasnât as good at hiding his feelings as he is now, so insight wasnât particularly necessary.â
Getting a read on Koutarouâs feelings now was far more difficult than it had been when he was a child. So it made sense that it would take more time for Kiriha to notice. Kotori didnât think herself particularly exceptional. Of course, her personality probably also played a part in her awareness of others.
âIâm sorry for making you worry about me, Kotori,â said Kiriha.
âThatâs not... Iâm sure that if you met Kou-niisan at the time, you would have noticed it immediately, Kiriha-san.â
âThank you. Iâll think of it that way.â
Kotoriâs words brought a smile back to Kirihaâs face. Kotori felt a closeness to her, since she was acting more feminine and emotional than usual. Kiriha wasnât perfect at all times. She was a normal girl, and once Kotori sensed that, she felt like sheâd be able to get along well with her.
Kotori had been proven right about her initial impression of Koutarou on the same day. When he left, Kenji had told her what had happened with his family.
âHe thinks itâs his fault that his mom died. So he wonât get along with anyone to avoid screwing up and letting someone else die. He doesnât want to feel that way again.â
âI feel sorry for him...â
âThatâs not good, though.â
âYeah...â
âSo if you ever see him alone, you should follow him. You donât need a reason for it.â
âWonât he hate me?â
âHe didnât hate me for it.â
âThen Iâll try.â
Kotori hadnât just been following Kenji and Koutarou around because she liked them. She was also doing it because Kenji had asked her.
