Bitter Enemies in the Same Boat
Wednesday, November 24th
According to the reports, the trailer carrying the disassembled weapons was passing through the region where Koutarou, Yurika, and Theia currently were. It was on its way to a larger city where Elfariaâs faction had a military base, which was believed to be the target of the imperial surprise attack.
âWhy donât they just directly bomb it from the air?â
âItâs too urban. A bomber attack or a battleship bombardment would mean high civilian casualties if they didnât announce it beforehand.â
âAnd if they did that, the people at the base would have time to prepare... On the other hand, if they attack unannounced, thereâs no way the public is going to condone it.â
âThatâs right. Moreover, intentionally bombing an urban area knowing there will be civilian casualties is a war crime. Itâs a violation of the Galactic Treatyâs code of conduct.â
âSo theyâd lose all credibility in claiming they were in the right.â
âIf things were a little further along and the military had a stranglehold on the media, they might bomb a city without any hesitation, but thatâs not realistic right now.â
âI see. So thatâs why theyâre using the new mobile weapons.â
Koutarou, Theia, and Yurika were currently travelling with the local squad that would be attacking the DKI trailer. Since their route was the same for a good part of the way, theyâd decided to move as one unit for additional security until it was time to part ways.
âBut that means that you were doing some sketchy stuff in the past.â
âLike what?â
âYou tried to blow up Corona House with Blue Knight when we just met, remember?â
âYou also shot Maki-chan with a laser cannon, Theia-chan!â
âSh-Shut up! That was just youthful indiscretion!â
The three friends were riding in a transport truck that would take them all the way to the base in the heart of Pardomshiha territory. More specifically, it was a Forthorthian truck. Rather than having tires like the trucks on Earth did, it hovered just above the ground. Thanks to that, there was practically no road noise to stymie the conversation going on within.
âYouâd better thank Ruth-san for stopping you.â
âI already have! Now letâs stop talking about when I was stupid!â
âAhahaha! By the way... how long is it going to take us to reach the others?â
âHmm? Well, weâll need to cover twice the distance we did in the forest, but at this rate, it shouldnât take more than two hours or so.â
The commute to the base was about two hundred kilometers, or, as Theia had said, twice the trek theyâd made on foot to get through the forest. If the truck they were aboard moved at full speed the entire time, they would arrive within the hour. However, in order to avoid drawing too much attention to themselves, they were travelling at the same speed any commercial vehicle would. If they kept that up, theyâd make it to their destination in about two hours.
âIt took us four and a half days to get through the forest and this is only going to take two hours.
