After exercise, a 'warm-down' period of active movement is recommended, so that the 'muscle-pump' and to a lesser extent the 'respiratory pump', continue to massage the blood in the veins back to the heart. These, along with the venous tone, will prevent accumulation of blood in the legs, and therefore inadequate venous return, and consequent reduced cardiac output. Reduced cardiac output can lead to a decrease in the flow of blood to the brain and the possibility of fainting. If fainting occurs for this reason, it is self correcting, as the effect of gravity is removed in the horizontal position, and blood flow to the brain is restored. A 'warm-down' period also maintains the blood flow through the muscle capillaries, so that oxygen supplies are kept up, and carbon dioxide and lactic acid are removed; in addition the draining of tissue fluid away from the muscles in the lymphatic system is maintained.
