Companion Planting

I love how Margaret Roberts credits her wonderful grandmother for teaching her about companion planting at the tender age of seven, and how a very big part of her knowledge happened by chance discovery.

The best strawberries I ever grew were in a bed where I had, at the last minute, stuck a whole bunch of pea plants left over from my pea seedlings. It was long before I knew legumes are nitrogen fixers. (You should really google that. Just do it now: “legumes as nitrogen fixers”. You’re welcome!)

With all of that said, I am supplying you only with a list of companions to match the list of vegetables on the two sowing guides I’ve provided (see the back of the book). I really do hope you experiment a little more with this.

The book list (in Resources) has some wonderful gardening books, and if you know the garden bug has bitten, they are a lovely investment. One particularly worthwhile one to get your hands on is a copy of Companion Planting by Margaret Roberts. I absolutely love her writing style and, as she was such a brilliant pioneer in the area of natural gardening in South African soil, it can only be a valuable addition to your home library.

One thing I will add here is that onions and garlic surprisingly do not like each other! In the soil next to each other, that is, not in the pan frying in some oil.
