For higher level networking, Vala comes with a binding to gio, which is a generic input/output library based on glib. gio contains APIs for synchronous and asynchronous (network) transfers, the latter being especially relevant for developing graphical user interfaces. As these are typically based on event loops, non-blocking APIs are required.

As an example, we will now learn how to query a web server, specifically, a web service providing a JSON weather report similar to the one presented in the previous section.
