Chapter Eighteen

They were halfway back to the Pneuma Building before either of them spoke. Strange it was Wade who broke the silence. ‘Are you planning on using that?’

When she answered him with a confused stare, he nodded to the Arnis stick she held in a tight grip.

‘The jury’s still out,’ she said, loosening her hold and flexing stiff fingers.

For a long moment, he didn’t respond, but in the light of the dashboard she could make out by the tensing of the expressive muscles along his jaw that he had something to say, but was finding it difficult. ‘I deserve it,’ he said finally.

‘You didn’t lock me in.’ Somehow that was all she could manage. Somehow that was what mattered most. She was surprised by the deep sense of relief she felt at knowing he hadn’t been the one who locked her in, even though the thought that it was someone else terrified her.

His fists were tight against the steering wheel, and his mouth was a thin, hard line pressing against his teeth. ‘More like I locked you out.’

She shifted the stick from hand to hand and stared out the window at the passing traffic. ‘That I got. That didn’t surprise me, but the locking me in,’ she shook her head and found herself looking through misted eyes. ‘That, I couldn’t believe you’d do.’

But Carla,’ he glanced over at her just before he pulled the Jeep into the underground parking garage of the Pneuma Building and nosed it into Ellis’ space, ‘if I’d looked at your texts like I should have, none of this would have happened.’

‘It would have happened anyway. It just might have taken a bit longer.’ Then she added, ‘And it’ll happen again.’

He didn’t argue with her. He was as much of a pragmatist as she was. ‘Then we have to be prepared when it does,’ he said, ‘and next time, we nail the bastard.’

For a moment they both sat in the Jeep not moving, as though the energy to do so had vanished like an exhaled breath. They could see the extra guards standing at the back entrance to the Dungeon. ‘You expected that I’d shut you out?’ he said, still not looking at her.

‘I never thought you’d let me in in the first place.’

He offered no response to that, instead he got out of the Jeep, and she startled when he came around to open the door for her and undid her safety belt. She felt as though someone had pushed her pause button and all she could do was sit there, clinging to her stupid stick. Then he took her gently by her good
