Chapter Seven

“That went way better than I was expecting,” Erin said, eyes wide and manic as she poured syrup all over her pancakes.

Billie’s tongue nervously played with her lip ring and she sat slumped in the diner booth, both legs kicked out in front of her so far that one even threatened to trip people walking in the aisle between the tables. She stared at the thick syrup dripping down the side of Erin’s pancakes.

“I had a great time,” Rex said, still wearing the leopard-print coat they had taken from the party the night before, looking demure as they cut into their omelet. Billie stared at her usual hangover breakfast congealing in front of her. Chocolate chip pancakes with bacon. Lots of bacon. Her stomach churned at the sight of them, and not because of all the alcohol still working its way out of her system.

Rex had found Billie and Lois a while later, Billie’s arms still around Lois and resting on her stomach. Lois had been quietly singing along to whatever song was pumping through the radio. Billie had been drunk and happy and warm until Rex popped their little bubble with reality. Thankfully they got Lois home safely and then both crashed at Billie’s place before meeting Erin for breakfast at the Cactus Café.

Erin was far too happy this morning and Billie found it suspicious. Or maybe it was the emotional whiplash with how quickly she pulled away from Lois. Physically and mentally. She wanted to text her to see if she was okay but distracted herself by stabbing her pancakes with her fork so hard that it scraped against the bottom of the plate.

She had to stop these feelings for Lois or else she’d never get June back. After all, these warm and fuzzy feelings for Lois was because she was there and they were spending a lot of time together. Right? Not to take away from how pretty Lois was, or how cute it was when she talked about something she liked and her eyes lit up and she’d gesture wildly with her hands.

No. Not to take away from those things. They were very nice things that someone might look for in a girlfriend. Just not her. She only had eyes for June.

Erin poked the blob of makeup badly covering up the hickey on Billie’s neck and jerked her out of her thoughts. “You also had a good time.”

She batted her hand away.

“I saw the TikTok—”

“Of what? That’s illegal,” Billie blurted. She suddenly lifted up her fork with the pancake still stuck onto the end of it. It flopped on the fork dangerously. She hadn’t noticed Krystal bringing out her phone when they were in the bedroom.

“Chill. Krystal posted a bunch of selfies of you two and some sappy song,” Erin said. “You probably didn’t notice but your followers skyrocketed.”

Billie had noticed. She wanted to see
