Building Relational Bonds in Online Environments
Building community and culture (Bennett, 2009) is an important support for virtual teams. Bennettâs (2010a) research findings indicate that internal communication (such as TXT) can provide opportunities for organizational members to learn about the culture of a group and foster social interaction. Jarvenpaa and Leidner (1999) emphasize the importance of building social communication among virtual participants at the outset of a project, prior to full task immersion. They argue that it is critical to build social connections and bonds among individuals to allow virtual teams to build shared norms and values in the absence of previous working relationships. The creation of virtual icebreakers and socialization activities can enhance the swift trust process. Johnson, Suriya, Yoon, Berrett, and La Fleur (2002) suggest that virtual team members need more time at the early stages of the group process to coordinate activities and establish relationships, protocols, and norms for working. In a course environment, this can be accomplished during week 1 when student teams are forming.
