By the time Abby and Muse hit the road, everything was shrouded in darkness. Abby squinted through her dirty windshield when the headlights of oncoming vehicles shined through and partially blinded her. Driving at night was not one of her favorite activities, and she would usually avoid it at all costs, choosing to either remain at home or crash at Jenny’s house. That was definitely not an option tonight.

Abby had opened and promptly closed her mouth several times, hoping to start a conversation. No words would come yet. Besides, she wanted to see Muse’s reaction to her questions. She needed to see her eyes. Her mouth. Would her lips remain in the frozen straight line or curve upwards in the same manner Abby had become accustomed to over the past few days when Muse delighted in a new experience?

Venturing a side glance, Abby saw Muse’s head turned toward the glass as she seemed to stare outside at the passing greenery that wasn’t visible in the inky black darkness. The trip was painful on so many levels. This was not the comfortable silence of two people who knew each other well or connected immediately. Abby could not do a thing as that instant ease and attraction slipped away like sand through her fingers.

Without saying a single word, Abby tossed the keys on the counter with more force than she intended. She pointed to the couch and directed, “Sit. We’re going to talk about what the hell happened at Jenny’s. That was not jealousy. You promised full disclosure before we left, so out with it and include an explanation of tonight, please.”

Muse looked like she was heading to the gallows as she slowly made her way to the couch. Sighing, she sat heavily.

Abby removed her jacket and tossed it on the chair adjacent to the couch. Sitting on the couch next to Muse, and turning to face her with an expectant look, she grabbed her hands.

Muse sighed. “I’ve been struggling with a decision. I almost made the wrong one, but tonight it became clear I only have one option.”

Abby rolled her eyes. “Can you for once be a trifling less obtuse?”

“It’s my fault what is happening with art. My selfish decision to take a vacation.”

“You aren’t making sense.”

Muse sat a little straighter and declared with a fair amount of force in her voice. “I am Inspiration Northwest, Abby.”

“What do you mean?”

“The reason inspired art came to a screeching halt in the Northwest is because I was burned out. It started with you, Abby. Every week a new subject lost their way, but three months ago, you started having a writer’s block, and” —Muse pulled her hand away and pointed to her chest— “nothing I tried altered that.” Muse’s hand dropped limply to her lap.

“You aren’t to blame for my block. That’s ridiculous. So much is happening in the writing world, and I don’t know if I can compete or keep up with the changes. It’s an evolution I wasn’t prepared for. This is on me.
