He tried to push the sunlight away, wishing he had closed the curtains before falling asleep, but eventually the morning forced his hand. With a stretch of his arms, he rolled over and cracked his eyes. Martin was still flopped over the chair, his head dangling to the side like it was ready to pop off and roll away. Remembering he wasn’t even home, Austin craned his head, squinting against the light, and took in his surroundings.

What time is it?

With a heave, he lifted his still-tired body to a sitting position. Spotting his shoes on the floor, he slid his feet into them and began searching for his phone. He didn’t see it on the couch, so he climbed onto the floor and peeked under the table. Nothing.

“Goddammit,” he mumbled to himself.

A glimmer caught his eye. He smiled. The phone was right in front of him, stuck between the couch cushions. He had fallen asleep with it in his hand and forgotten. As he got up from the floor, he licked his lips. Dry, and so was his throat. Abnormally dry. On his way to the kitchen for a drink, he kicked Martin’s chair and told him to get up. As he passed by the front door, he noticed a sticky note stuck to the frame just below the peephole but ignored it and kept going. His mind was temporarily lost in the question of how Tommy was going to react to the news that he had seen that thing again. Tommy was a cocky asshole at his best and would probably give him some sort of smartass response to outline his disbelief.

Even Martin was shocked.

When he’d told Martin what happened the previous night, his friend stared at him for a few minutes, a blank look on his face.

“Bullshit,” Martin had muttered.

It wasn’t a “bullshit” of disbelief, though. It was more of a “bullshit” like “no way.” They decided to just wait for Tommy to arrive in the morning so they could figure out what to do as a group. Martin seemed to think it was a ghost. Austin wasn’t any sort of paranormal expert, but last he knew, you weren’t supposed to be able to touch ghosts. He didn’t even believe in ghosts, not really.

As an avid science enthusiast, he was a fan of things that came with evidence. He had always viewed the paranormal as something that would probably never have anything beyond circumstantial and easily manipulated evidence—aka fake evidence. But a part of science was always being ready to see, and acknowledge, new evidence, if it was factual. He highly doubted it would come to that. He hoped Tommy wouldn’t think of it as paranormal, because if he did, he wouldn’t be able to expect Tommy to take it seriously, not when Austin wouldn’t take it seriously himself if they told him they had seen a ghost.

He turned around with the glass of water to his mouth and saw Martin fidgeting in the chair. Finishing the water, Austin placed the cup in the sink and walked over to the front door and looked at the sticky note.
