Back on Route 66

Between Flagstaff and Williams, Route 66 is poorly maintained but reaches its highest point on the route, at 7,300ft (2,225 meters) above sea level, just east of Parks. Parks in the Pines general store and Union 76 gas station (www.route66historicparksgeneralstore.com) opened in 1910 and also contains a post office. Nearby are the remains of the Beale Wagon Road Historic Trail, a sturdy 120ft (37-meter) -wide track constructed in 1857, used by pioneers to travel to the Colorado River.

Back on I-40, the next town, historic Williams ¶ [map] , as well as its Main Street on Route 66 and the nearby mountain, were named for Bill Williams (1787–1849), an early fur trapper whose statue stands at the west end of town. The excellent Route 66 Magazine was once published here, the last town on Route 66 to be bypassed by I-40.
