Leto was a nymph who had the misfortune of attracting Zeus, thus invoking the wrath of his jealous wife, Hera. Pregnant and in flight from Hera, Leto was befriended by wolves who led her to the Xanthos River to refresh herself. The incident allegedly gave the Lycian culture its name, which derives from the Greek lykos, wolf. Leto was not without a vengeful side of her own – she turned some local shepherds who refused her water into frogs.
